  • Active Axon PPT Template

Blog Pic An axon is a long and slender projection of a neuron which conducts electrical impulses away from the body of a neuron's cell. An axon is one of the two types of protoplasmic protrusions which extrude from the neuron's cell body. The other of this type is known as dendrites. Axons can be differentiated from dendrites by several features which includes shape, length and functions. However, some neurons do not have axons and transmit signals. Factually, no neuron has more than one axon. However, in invertebrates like insects and leeches, the axons consists of several regions which function independently of each other.
Axons make contact with other cells at a junction called synapses. At a synapse, the membrane where the axon is located closely adjoins the membrane of the target cell and special molecular structures serve to transmit electrical or electrochemical signals across the gap.
In certain sensory neurons, the electrical impulse travels along an axon from the peripheral nervous system to the cell body and from the cell body of the neuron to the spinal cord along another branch of the same axon. Also, the dysfunction of the axons causes many inherited and acquired neurological disorders which can affect both the peripheral and central neurons.
