  • Airway Devices

Blog Pic The Airway Devices may be defined as those medical  devices which can be used to help in breathing to an unconscious person. It opens the airways for a person who is finding it difficult to respire by himself/herself. This method of emergency airway management has to be undertaken only on unconscious persons as during the position of unconsciousness, the jaw muscles obstruct the airway and makes it difficult for a human being to respire.

As these devices are meant for medical purpose, these devices must be used by a skilled medical personnel or assistant. This device is used used by laying down the unconscious person on his/her back. Then, the J-tube must be inserted towards the roof of the mouth. While doing so, it should be ensured that the tongue is not pushed back. Then, the airway device must be rotated 180 degrees to let it face down towards the trachea. Precaution must be taken that the device providing the respiration must not be taped as the unconscious patient may vomit as soon as he/she gains consciousness.

The thing of utmost importance in the whole process is the size of the J-tube. This is because of the fact that a small tube can be ineffective while a long one can obstruct the airway into the mouth of the unconscious patient. The best method to identify the perfect size of the oropharyngeal airway device is to measure the length from the corner of the patient's mouth to the tip of his/her earlobe.
