  • YouTube VP9 Ultra HD streaming Technology!



    A Company named On2 Technology has first created the True Motion and TrueMotion2 codecs then it renamed as Video Processing 3 or VP3. Then the company has created improved versions like VP4, VP5, and VP6 etc. Moreover in 2010, the company has acquired by Google. Now VP9 is the latest version of Google’s open source project to improve the delivery of the content on the Internet.

    YouTube’s VP9 ultra HD video codec using current encoding technology called MPEG-4 that compress video files to half size and stream at 4K resolution. The resolution is four times higher than HDTV resolution. VP9 codec is a part of WebM. IT is an open project that is sponsored by Google. Google has recently announced plans to use VP9 for 4K videos, but the way is not that much easy when the competitor is on the race! The HEVC is also seeking to be the standard for 4K TV. The similarity between HEVC and VP9 is same goal to compress video to use half data required to stream HD video.

    Codec term defines as “coder-decoder” that is the software that uses algorithm to systematically compress video data into a compact form that fit for broadcasting efficiently. Users can not watch VP9 content now even Google has added support to its Chrome browser. There are only few videos that are using it. For checking that which codec is used on a particular video, one need to right click a video in the latest version of the YouTube player and then click on the “State for nerds” option.
