: SHODHANA SUPRABHA M.S 1st year PG scholar, Dept. of Rasa Shastra S.J.G.A.M College, KOPPAL
: CONTANTS Introduction Nirukthi Definition Importance Objective Types Procedures Drugs used for shodhana. Role of media. Yantras used for shodhana Changes during shodhana process Discussion Conclusion
: INTRODUCTION References regarding shodhana are available since the time of charaka samhitha(1000bc-500bc) Shodhana is swatantra vidhi. Shodhana is a samskara. Shodhana is a very first step of Aushadha samskara.
: NIRUKTHI zÉÑkÉ + ÍhÉcÉç + srÉÑÈ
: DEFNITATION iÉSåuÉ zÉÉãkÉlÉqÉç MüqÉï SìèurÉ SÉåwÉ ÌlÉuÉUhÉqÉ| -(rÉÉSuÉ ÎeÉ) Shodhana is a process where impurities are removed from the mineral. zÉÑkrÉjÉÇ ÌMürÉiÉå rÉxiÉÔ xÉÇxMüÉU iÉiÉÑ zÉÉãkÉlÉ|| The process by which purification is done is called as Shodana samskara.
: E̬¹æUÉæwÉkÉæÈ xÉÉ®ïÇ Ì¢ürÉiÉå mÉåwÉhÉÉÌSMüqÉç | qÉsÉÌuÉÎcNû¨ÉrÉå iɨÉÑ zÉÉãkÉlÉÇ iÉÌSWûÉãcrÉiÉå || -(UxÉiÉUÌ…¡ûÍhÉ 2/52) It is a process in which blemishes are separated from the substance by various process. ÌlÉÌSï¹æUÉæwÉkÉæÈ xÉÉ®ïÇ mÉåwÉhÉçÇ xuÉãSlÉÉÌSMüqÉç | SÒ¹Ç SÉãwÉÌuÉlÉÉzÉÉrÉ zÉÉåkÉlÉÇ mÉËUMüÐÌiÉïiÉqÉç || -(UxÉÍqɧÉÉ, mÉëjÉqÉ UÎzqÉ mÉ× 11) Shodhana is a process of removal of impurities from substances by means of different pharmaceutical process like xuÉåSlÉ, qÉSïlÉ etc with particular drugs.
: Collective definition Shodhana is the combination of processes where it removes unwanted part from the drug or its ill effects, which enhances the properties of the drug and makes the drug suitable for desired actions. Though the literal meaning of shodhana is purification but it has wide implications. By impregnating and triturating with the organic materials like herbal juice (in the form of weak acids and bases) they are made homologous to the cells and thus their toxicity get reduced and acceptability by the cells is increased. Example: Role of Garlic in purifying mercury where in the sulpur content in garlic not only helps in detoxifying the mercury and its stabilization but also the enhances  properties as garlic by itself is a known anti-oxidant it makes Parada (mercury) a better ingredient in further drug designing.
: IMPORTANCE Shodhana is a samskara vishesha. Shodhana helps to do sangatha bedha of drug and makes it marana upayogi. Helps to achieve guanavrudhi of the drug. Shodhana helps to remove dravya gatha dhosha and aushudhi gatha dhosha.
: OBJECTIVES
: Conversation of some characteristics of the drugs to different stages. The enhancement of therapeutic action of dravya. To remove the impurities in the Kaneja dravyas like Abaraka. Elimination of harmful matters from drug. Modification of undesirable physical properties of drug. OBJECTIVES continued..
: TYPES
: Bedha zÉÉåkÉlÉ process is grossly subdivided into two major categories as follows 1. xÉÉqÉÉlrÉ zÉÉåkÉlÉ It is used as a general procedure for zÉÉåkÉlÉ of all drugs. Eg: xÉÉqÉÉlrÉ zÉÉåkÉlÉ of dhatu 2. ÌuÉzÉåwÉ zÉÉåkÉlÉ It is used as specific procedure for particular drug material individually. It should be applied after xÉÉqÉÉlrÉ zÉÉåkÉlÉ. Eg: ÌuÉzÉåwÉ zÉÉåkÉlÉ of sÉÉåWû in ̧ÉÄTüsÉ YuÉÉjÉ
: 3. Astha samskra of Parada
: PROCEDURES 1
: PROCEDURES continued
: Dravyas used for Shodhana
: Use of Dravyas Kshara dravyas: to remove external impurities. Amla dravyas: it increase the prabodana of the drug, to remove doshas of drug. Lavana dravyas: it helps to soften the drug.
: ROLE OF MEDIA It is very interesting that specific media is used for zÉÉåkÉlÉ of particular substances like ̧ÉÄTüsÉ YuÉÉjÉ for zÉÉåkÉlÉ of sÉÉåWû, aÉÉãqÉ賈 for zÉÉåkÉlÉ of uÉixÉlÉÉpÉ etc. The media acts like solvent to dissolve the material for easy separation from the insoluable impurities like in aÉÑaaÉÑsÉÑ and lÉuÉxÉÉSU zÉÉåkÉlÉ. Media acts to eradicate toxic chemical substances from the drug like qÉlÉÈÍzÉsÉ where cÉÔhÉÉåïSMü (lime water)is generally used for zÉÉåkÉlÉ. Media helps in physical transformation of some metals and minerals
: Yantars used in Shodhana Dola Yantra – Shanka shodhana Damaru Yantra - Parada shodhana Puta Yantra – Swarna shodhana Swedana Yantra – Gandhaka shodhana Khalva Yantra - Parada shodhana
: CHANGES DURING SHODHANA PROCESS 1 1. PHYSICAL CHANGES a)Elimination of physical impurities MüÎqmÉssÉM - brick powder. aÉÑaaÉÑsÉÑ - physical mixture. b)Reduction in hardness By repeated heating and quenching, hardness of the metal gets reduced c)Increase in brittleness repeated heating and quenching metals and minerals become brittle d)reduction in particle size
: CHANGES DURING SHODHANA PROCESS 2 2.CHEMICAL CHANGES a)Elimination of chemical impurities During zÉÉåkÉlÉ of native qÉÉͤÉMü (CuFeS2) impurities like arsenic get eliminated by heating. b)Formation of chemical compounds  sÉÉãWû when heated up to red hot, reacts with atmospheric oxygen to form ferric oxide, which is favourable to the body. c)Change into desired compound.   During zÉÉåkÉlÉ of Oûƒ¡ûhÉ and MüÉÇÍ¤É water portion is evaporated and desired chemical compound is formed.
:  3.BIOLOGICAL CHANGES   Reduction in particle size helps in absorption, smoothness leads to non irritability and all chemical changes make the material homogeneous to our body. zÉÉåÍkÉiÉ uÉixÉlÉÉpÉ purified in cow’s urine is converted into cardiac stimulant, where as crude uÉixÉlÉÉpÉ is claimed to be cardiac depressant. Seeds of MÑümÉÏsÉÑ purified in cow’s milk show CNS depressant activity. AgeÉlÉ purified in juice of pÉ×…¡ûUÉeÉ is proved non-toxic to eyes in experimental animals. CHANGES DURING SHODHANA PROCESS 3
: DISSUSION Shodhana process can be compared to some of the modern metallurgical processes. Where shodhana helps to break the covalent and lactic bond. During the oxidation process removes electrons from a metal, and is thus reduces its mass. During transformation the metal turns from one state to another state.
: Conclusion We all know that shodana is a first samaskara so it is necessary to execute the concept of shodana properly. As in the present days there is a miss concept that rasa drugs are poisonous to body and they are not absorbed in our body totally .To remove that fear one should understand the concept properly and carry out the process.
